Can a Basement Feel Like It Has Natural Sunlight? The CoeLux Experience
Imagine walking into a basement and looking up to see what appears to be a blue sky, with a beam of sunlight entering the room and casting natural-looking shadows.
This is the experience created by CoeLux artificial skylight technology. Designed for interiors where real daylight is limited or impossible to introduce, CoeLux does much more than make a room brighter. It recreates key characteristics of natural sunlight and sky — changing the way an enclosed space is perceived and experienced.
And research suggests that the effect is not purely visual.
Why CoeLux Is Different
- Creates the perception of a blue sky with real visual depth
- Produces directional, sunlight-like illumination and realistic shadows
- Research shows measurable responses related to wellbeing, stress and spatial perception
- Plants can photosynthesise and grow under appropriate CoeLux lighting conditions
- Designed for enclosed and underground spaces where natural daylight cannot easily reach
How Can Artificial Light Feel So Natural?
CoeLux combines high-brightness LEDs, advanced optical systems and nanostructured materials to reproduce Rayleigh scattering — the same physical phenomenon that makes the real sky appear blue.
The result is not simply an illuminated ceiling panel. The system creates apparent depth above the viewer and a directional beam of sunlight-like light, producing natural-looking highlights and shadows.
That distinction matters. Human perception of daylight depends on much more than brightness. Direction, colour, contrast, shadows and the apparent depth of the sky all contribute to the feeling of being connected to the outdoors.

More Than a Visual Illusion
One of the most interesting aspects of CoeLux is what happens after the initial visual impression.
In a randomized controlled study involving 100 participants in two identical rooms, the CoeLux skylight and the atmosphere it created were perceived as significantly more natural and attractive than standard lighting. The system performed better across the evaluated environmental qualities, with large measured effects and high statistical significance in most categories.
Research conducted in a windowless office environment also found differences in how people experienced the space. Participants under CoeLux showed better ratings for performance-related activity, while measures associated with anxiety and claustrophobic feelings were lower than under conventional lighting.
In the anxiety assessment specifically, 70% of participants rated their state anxiety lower under CoeLux than under standard lighting.
For a basement, this is particularly relevant. The question is not simply “Is there enough light?” but rather “How does this room make me feel?”
What Research Shows About Wellbeing
Some studies have gone beyond questionnaires and examined physiological responses.
In a workplace study using EEG, ECG and salivary measurements, researchers reported lower stress-related responses and a more relaxed autonomic response under CoeLux compared with fluorescent lighting. Daytime exposure was also associated with an earlier onset of nighttime melatonin secretion.
A separate study involving 21 mildly depressed geriatric inpatients found improved subjective calmness under CoeLux. Measurements showed an approximately 3.7% reduction in heart rate and a 22% increase in a heart-rate-variability indicator. Participants also voluntarily remained beneath the CoeLux “sun” for 97% of the available period.
CoeLux environments have also been used in clinical Bright Light Therapy research. Studies involving patients with depressive disorders have reported improvements in sleep quality and other clinical outcomes when light therapy was used alongside medical treatment.
These findings should be interpreted correctly: a residential CoeLux installation is not a treatment for depression. The clinical results relate to controlled Bright Light Therapy protocols. What they demonstrate is that carefully designed light exposure can affect people in ways that extend beyond visual aesthetics.
Plants Respond to It Too
Plants provide another indication that CoeLux light is more than a decorative effect.
Its spectrum includes wavelengths that plants can use for photosynthesis, although the intensity remains lower than direct sunlight.
In controlled experiments with Anthurium and Spathiphyllum, plants exposed to medium and higher CoeLux light levels produced new biomass, while one Spathiphyllum flowered.
Researchers also observed phototropism: leaves physically turned towards the CoeLux beam, responding to it as a directional light source.
Several shade-tolerant plants have also grown successfully under CoeLux lighting without signs of stress, demonstrating its potential for incorporating real greenery into enclosed interiors.
CoeLux does not replace sunlight for every plant — particularly species that require very high light levels — but it creates new possibilities for biophilic design in underground spaces.
Rethinking the Residential Basement
A basement can be much more than storage or secondary accommodation. It can become a lounge, home office, gym, wellness area, guest suite or flexible living space.
But premium finishes and conventional lighting alone cannot remove one of the defining characteristics of an underground room: the absence of daylight.
CoeLux tackles that problem at a more fundamental level.
By combining the perception of sky depth, directional sunlight-like illumination, realistic shadows and the possibility of integrating living plants, the system can significantly change how a basement feels.
It does not turn an underground room into an above-ground one, and it does not replace real daylight.
What it can do is create a much more natural experience in spaces where sunlight would otherwise never reach.
A basement no longer has to feel like a basement simply because it is below ground.
